Themes for the Year
Off With Her Head
This project has a history focus and teaches children about the life and times of the Tudors and Tudor Monarchs in the period of 1485-1603. At the heart of the project the children learn how to write persuasive reports and scripts, and develop additional understanding and awareness of the use of language in the plays of William Shakespeare, the most significant writer of all time. In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding by defending one of Henry’s wives in a Tudor court.
In this project the children will learn:
• About the everyday lives of the Tudor people;
• About the Kings and Queens of the Tudor period and their impact on society;
• How to use first hand and secondary sources of evidence and evaluate their accuracy;
• How human rights have changed since Tudor times;
• How to present a persuasive argument in scripts, reports and in verbal presentations;
• About the social, political and moral issues of Tudor times;
• About the writer William Shakespeare and the significance of his plays on English culture, theatre and language.
Bones, Blood and Gory Bits
This project has a science focus and teaches children about the human body including significant organs such as the heart, brain and lungs. At the heart of this project children write explanations to describe biological processes of the human body and develop additional skills using a range of technical and scientific language.
In this project the children will learn:
• About the heart, circulation, the pulse and blood;
• About major organs of the human body and their functions in keeping us alive and well;
• How exercise and a healthy diet keeps the body well and fit;
• About the digestive system;
• How to write explanation texts using scientific language;
• How scientific and medical research has changed over time;
• How to work collaboratively.
Flight Engineers
This project has a science focus and teaches children about flight, forces and the properties of a range of different materials. At the heart of this project the children learn how to write instructional texts and develop additional skills in explanation and biography writing. In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding by creating their own flying toys and gadgets for a toy store campaign.
In this project the children will learn:
• How to find information from non-fiction books and the Internet;
• About a range of flying gadgets/machines and the scientific principles which make them work;
• About a range of flying animals and their habitats;
• About the history of flight and its economical and social importance;
• How to collect and record scientific data;
• How to construct a fair test and present scientific information;
• How to evaluate the effectiveness of materials for use in designing flying gadgets/machines;
• How to present a design brief to an audience of prospective purchasers, using multimedia.
New Visions
This project has an art focus and teaches children how to use techniques of digital photography including perspective, viewpoints and manipulation of digital imagery for effect. At the heart of this project children write narrative stories in a familiar setting and develop additional skills using different forms of speech in story writing. In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding to create a multimedia presentation and exhibition which shows their geographical, historical, photographic and personal perspectives of the city.
In this project the children will learn:
• About the history of their town or city and how it has changed over the past 100 years;
• About the geographical position and features of their town or city;
• How to use multi media including photography to look differently at familiar features including buildings;
• How to read maps and plans, and use co-ordinates;
• How to write narrative settings in a familiar location;
• How to use speech in different ways in story writing;
• To articulate their own views about the place in which they live;
• How to present their views in a creative way.
