Pop up

This project has a design technology focus and teaches children how to make cards and books using simple mechanisms and a range of different materials. At the heart of this project children will learn how to write and re-tell traditional fairy tales, and learn the additional skills of using verbs and pronouns in their
own writing. In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding by designing, making and writing pop up wedding invitations to Prince Charming and Cinderella’s wedding.

In this project the children will learn:
• How to describe and select appropriate materials for a task;
• How to make joins, moving parts and mechanisms;
• How to design a product which is appropriate for the user;
• How to write a formal invitation;
• How to re-tell and sequence a traditional fairy tale;
• How to upload a digital photograph and use email.


Land Ahoy!
This project has a design and technology focus and teaches children about the properties of different materials, a range of mechanisms and forces, and aspects of water and coastal safety. At the heart of this project children will learn how to write narrative stories and additional skills in recording scientific tests and enquiries. In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding by designing and making their own lifeboats to rescue cargo from Captain Buttons’ sinking ship

In this project the children will learn:
• About simple mechanisms such as pulleys, levers and joints;
• About forces (push, pull, floating and sinking);
• About the properties of different materials;
• How to conduct a fair test;
• About water transport through the ages and across the world;
• About aspects and features of the Welsh coastline;
• How to use a range of sources to find information;
• How to write and re-tell narrative stories.
Mini Zoo
This project has a science focus and teaches children about different animals, their life cycles and what they
need to stay alive and be well. At the heart of this project children learn how to write instructions and explanations, and learn additional skills in labelling maps, animals and plants.

In this project the children will learn:
• About the habitats of domestic and wild animals;
• Why animals are important to us and how we care for them;
• About organisations and people who look after animals;
• How zoos are organised and how they look after animals;
• How to make a simple map or plan;
• How to solve simple money problems;
• How to use the Internet and books to find information.


Growing Things
This project has a science focus and teaches the children about the life cycle of plants, the conditions needed for growth and the names of parts of plants. At the heart of this project children will learn how to write simple reports and develop additional skills in sentence writing, labelling and recording ideas and first hand experiences. In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding by developing an area of the school grounds.

In this project the children will learn:
• The names of the parts of plants and how they grow;
• How different plants need different places to grow in different parts of the world;
• How to carry out fair tests and make accurate measurements;
• How to find information from different sources;
• How to write a report and present information, including illustrations and photographs;
• How artists draw plants, how plants are represented in art and how to make observational drawings of plants;
• How to collaborate together in a team.
