Themes for the Year
Pitter, Patter Puddle Play
This project has a Knowledge and Understanding of the World focus and enables children to explore water in its many different forms using their senses in a range of first hand sensory experiences. Opportunities should be provided for children to experience a range of activities that explore the properties of water, and the ways in which we use water in our everyday lives. Building on initial starting points during the Engage Stage, your observations will enable you to develop the project flexibly taking account of your children’s ideas and interests. During the Innovate Stage children should be encouraged to think creatively and critically applying their previous experiences, skills and understanding when challenged to build their own imaginative water features and fountains.
In this Project children will learn:
• About water in its different forms;
• How water is used in the home;
• About being safe near water;
• About wet weather including storms;
• About animals that live in ponds and streams;
• How to use volume and measures in practical activities;
• How to record their ideas, feelings and experiences through drawing, mark making and
emergent writing;
• That water is important for seeds and plants;
• How to respond to sounds and music using their bodies imaginatively;
• To listen to and use Welsh language across a range of experiences both in the indoor and
outdoor environment.
When I fall asleep
This project has a Knowledge and Understanding of the World focus and enables children to explore ‘after dark’ including finding out about the moon, stars, nocturnal animals and familiar routines at the end of the day. Opportunities should be provided for children to explore and experience the natural world as it darkens, so this project is best done during the winter months. Building on initial starting points during the Engage Stage, your observations will enable you to develop the project flexibly taking account of your children’s ideas and interests.
In this Project children will learn:
• About routines that they take part in at bedtime;
• About the moon and stars and how the sky changes at night;
• About sources of light and that dark is the absence of light;
• About nocturnal animals such as owls, bats and foxes including where they live and how they behave;
• About time;
• How to sing simple lullabies and nursery rhymes;
• How to express their own ideas and feelings about dreams that they experience;
• About being safe and feeling safe at night time;
• How to record their ideas and experiences through talk, mark making, drawing and emergent writing;
• To listen to and use Welsh language across a range of experiences both in the indoor and outdoor environment.
